How many organizations have implemented variable pricing?
I'm presenting variable pricing as an option to our ED and I'd like to give him an idea of how many theatres are already doing this (aside from the organizations that spoke at Tess Conference).
Thanks,
Mia

We've been using demand-based pricing at Pittsburgh Opera for a while. The season coming up will be our fourth.
We’re starting our first season – I’m juggling as we speak.

We use demand pricing at some of the theater organizations at Yale. We raise the price by a pre-determined amount after we reach a pre-determined percent sold. This method allows us to make all of the decisions in advance so the box office can react quickly when the milestones are met.
We have been doing this in different variations for three-four years now. If you have any questions let me know, I know there are a lot of us here who can tell you the pros and cons and give you some insights.

We have been using variable pricing for the last year or so. There were a few gotchas in set up that we discovered over time, but overall it has been going well.

We have been setting Dynamic pricing on performances at the Houston Symphony for a few seasons now. We have also started changing the price zones on seats on the fly based on sales. Good luck and may the force be with you!
Thank you to everyone who responded. A couple more questions:
- Are you using a date by date capacity percentage to trigger the increase in price? At what percent?
- What kind of customer response did you get? Increased subscriptions? Did it help level out other performances that had lower capacity? Able to see patrons buying earlier?
Thanks again.
We're still early in our implementation process, so we're still on another system however we've been doing demand based pricing for 3 years now.
I'd be interested to hear how everyone handles it on Tessitura as we are hashing that out right now.
Hi Michael. I showed Shelley how we do our dynamic pricing so that you have an audit trail of what price the ticket was and when. If you want to see how to just grab Shelley and come on over.
Thanks, I may take you up on that.
We are doing it Arts Club Theatre Company – and have been for the last two years. We’ve had great results and I would be happy to talk to you if you need more information.
Cheers,

This will be our second season using dynamic pricing here at McCarter, and it's working wonderfully for us.

- Are you using a date by date capacity percentage to trigger the increase in price? At what percent? – House count reports and cap percentages – the trigger to demand price is different for each productions/performances
Generally people did not complain – because if they really wanted to see it, they paid the higher price. We have increased our subscriptions because of demand based pricing, it’s definitely helped other productions with lower capacity, patrons are generally buying earlier.

We are entering our second season of demand based pricing. We use various methods to accomplish it based on the circumstances. We rezone individual seats, add additional price maps or expire old map and add new ones.
