QR Codes

Hello Everyone,

I hope this finds you all enjoying your summer and I hope to see many of you at conference.

I was discussing QR codes with my roommate last night as he works for a PR/Advertising company and I got to thinking about the possibility of adding QR codes to ticket templates so that we have a QR code on any printed ticket that goes out the door.

I am wondering if any of you have tossed around this idea and concurrently, am wondering if the BOCA printers have the print capabilities of handling QR codes that would be readable by a smartphone.

Sorry if you get two of these but I thought I'd also post this in the Marketing Forum as well. Any, thoughts, ideas or just a big discussion about this new and innovative marketing tool would be awesome.

Best,

  • Hi there. We have experimented with putting QR Codes here and there. Mostly on posters, window wraps and print ads but not tickets. We just send them to our website. I'm interested in what landing page you were thinking of sending them to. Every QR Code I have scanned on other people's materials just sent me to a web page that didn't really interest me or tell me much more than the ad itself. Although I did see a really good one from a show in NY that sent you to a funny video. I have yet to find a real use for them or wide adoption of them. I am the only person I know with a reader on my phone.

  • Hello LeeAnn,

I think the technology is still “new” and so many people aren’t using them. I just generated a QR code for our website and tried it out and did direct me right to our website. I can see many opportunities for use like having a source code auto-fill for subscribers who want to exchange on-line or direct subscribers to the on-line exchange portion of your web. For single tickets, I could see an auto-fill of a source code that give the patron a discount on a future purchase or something like this. To me, I see numerous possibilities for use of QR codes and how we as arts organizations move forward with using technology that is constantly changing.

I’m sure it’s too soon to really see what QR codes and do and I’m sure that those will evolve and change as well. I hope this discussion keeps up as I’d like to hear all sorts of ideas about this topic.

  • We aren't using them at the moment.  We did do some looking into the them a while back.  I have an increase in use in magazines.  I have seen them direct the user to an information page or even a video about the product advertised.

  • We are about to start adding them to our posters and brochures. Our plan is to drive people to web pages with special discounts and tracking codes applied. We also plan on using them to point to pages that will give added value to what is marketed on the poster/brochure with more background info/videos/archival content.

We don't want to take people to pages that just repeat the same content that is already on the posters/brochures. We look at it as providing added value.

Here at the Science Museum we've been using QR Codes for a couple years. We put them on certain collateral, especially things like bus shelter ads or when we wrap delivery trucks in museum ads.

For our current King Tut exhibition, we've been using QR Codes for Enter to Win contests. For example, we are currently partnering with local Dunn Bros Coffee Shops. Pick up a coffee, and you'll get a special King Tut coffee sleeve on it. The sleeve gets you $4 off a museum ticket, and it has a QR code that takes you to http://www.smm.org/dunnbros where you can enter to win a pair of tickets.

Well holy crap - I've just pulled results. The campaign started at the beginning of the month, and we already have 1,391 contest entries!

We also got a little Twitter buzz for our coffee sleeve. Here's a good photo so you can see how we used the QR Code: http://yfrog.com/gy5xwxjwj

The technology is still definitely very new in the United States and so we're trying to be strategic about where we place QR Codes. I have a giant QR Code outside my cube at work that takes people to our museum homepage. When a coworker walks by asking what it is, I simply say "Figure it out." =p

For those who want to get really creative (or have designers with mad Photoshop skillz), this is an awesome post:

Interesting to hear how other people are thinking about them and currently using them.

  • We have started doing them fairly often on outdoor and print ads, and typically direct to a landing page that contains a video – either a :30 commercial, or some other kind of content. We don’t ever direct to the general site. It’s still a bit early to report any key findings, but that’s the scoop from Roundabout.

We have done QR codes in print ads that have a younger target audience along with some outdoor kiosks and even recently with a single billboard in a highly trafficked area.  When we do them we always have a separate landing page and try to make the landing page optimized for mobile use.

When we did the billboard it was a remnant billboard that we purchased for a two week flight.  We had 462 people scan the QR code and going to the unique landing page.  There was a behind the scenes video to the current production that was on the landing page exclusively.  The average time on the landing page was 4:22 so people were really watching the video and reading the content.

Additionally, we received press from two different public radio stations, a segment on the evening news on the local ABC affiliate, and an article in our major newspaper that was picked up a re-published on the USAToday.com website.
