QR Codes

Hello Everyone,

I hope this finds you all enjoying your summer and I hope to see many of you at conference.

I was discussing QR codes with my roommate last night as he works for a PR/Advertising company and I got to thinking about the possibility of adding QR codes to ticket templates so that we have a QR code on any printed ticket that goes out the door.

I am wondering if any of you have tossed around this idea and concurrently, am wondering if the BOCA printers have the print capabilities of handling QR codes that would be readable by a smartphone.

Sorry if you get two of these but I thought I'd also post this in the Marketing Forum as well. Any, thoughts, ideas or just a big discussion about this new and innovative marketing tool would be awesome.

Best,

  • We are about to start adding them to our posters and brochures. Our plan is to drive people to web pages with special discounts and tracking codes applied. We also plan on using them to point to pages that will give added value to what is marketed on the poster/brochure with more background info/videos/archival content.

We don't want to take people to pages that just repeat the same content that is already on the posters/brochures. We look at it as providing added value.

    Best,
    Howard

Here at the Science Museum we've been using QR Codes for a couple years. We put them on certain collateral, especially things like bus shelter ads or when we wrap delivery trucks in museum ads.

For our current King Tut exhibition, we've been using QR Codes for Enter to Win contests. For example, we are currently partnering with local Dunn Bros Coffee Shops. Pick up a coffee, and you'll get a special King Tut coffee sleeve on it. The sleeve gets you $4 off a museum ticket, and it has a QR code that takes you to http://www.smm.org/dunnbros where you can enter to win a pair of tickets.

Well holy crap - I've just pulled results. The campaign started at the beginning of the month, and we already have 1,391 contest entries!

We also got a little Twitter buzz for our coffee sleeve. Here's a good photo so you can see how we used the QR Code: http://yfrog.com/gy5xwxjwj

The technology is still definitely very new in the United States and so we're trying to be strategic about where we place QR Codes. I have a giant QR Code outside my cube at work that takes people to our museum homepage. When a coworker walks by asking what it is, I simply say "Figure it out." =p

For those who want to get really creative (or have designers with mad Photoshop skillz), this is an awesome post:

Interesting to hear how other people are thinking about them and currently using them.
