Student Pricing - checking their ID

Hi,

I was wondering how people got around the issue of student pricing on the web and checking IDs. Say, for instance, that you offered student prices on the web - how do you handle the need to see some form of ID?

I was thinking perhaps creating a CSI type so that when the order comes in using that price type, the box office operator knows to create a CSI and ask the purchaser to fax or email through their ID.

But I was curious to see what other people did with this one.

Cheers,

Matt

  • We only allow student pricing via walk up or phone with will call pickup and let the visitor know they will need to present photo ID at will call. Our box office staff know to ask for ID when the visitor arrives. If they do not have valid ID they have to pay the difference. Since everything we do is general admission this works great. Not sure how this would work for reserved seating.

  • Hi Matt, One of our consortium members (The Wilma Theater) has a webAPI customization that forces an order shipping method of "ID Required - Tickets Held" for any web order that uses specific price types. They can then control how and when these tickets are printed; presumably that occurs once the patron is at the window with an ID in hand. ~Dan

    Hi there,

Our "Next" program student tickets are online-only, print-at-home only.
They have a unique ticket design that really stands out, so the usher knows
to see an ID before they scan them in to the theater. We add messaging
everywhere along the buy path, on the e-receipt & the print-at-home ticket
itself explaining that they must present their student ID along with their
ticket to the ticket-taker at the theater entrance. We also emailed a few
reminder to big shows last season telling them they have to present their
    ID.

Before student tickets were print-at-home only they were Will Call only
(still online-only for purchasing, though), and they had to show an ID to
the Box Office staffer in order to get their ticket.

    Good luck!
    Mary

  • Hi Mary,

Is there a way in Tessitura to force a delivery option on one price type, or did you do this through your web api?

    Thanks!

  • Hi Matt,

We sell student/youth tickets online, and selecting these price types triggers the "Hold at Box Office" MOD.  These price types (and many others available over the phone) will also trigger a custom procedure that adds "Show ID" to ticket headers, so that staff are sure to see the note at will call.

    Regards!  Catherine

    Hi Angela,

We forced the PAH delivery by using a unique MOS for the student tickets,
and they get in with a promo code. I don't think delivery methods can be
controlled by price types but of course your web designer could customize.

    Thanks,
    Mary

  • We also limit the delivery options online to Will Call only and have a custom ticket element set up to print how many tickets need some sort of ID presented on the header.

  • I think the missing part in all this that I forgot to mention is that we are on Tessitura Network Express Web (TNEW), and the shipping methods are controlled by the MOS. So unless you trigger a MOS shift with a promo code, they get access to all the Modes of Sale.

I think the issue that marketing is trying to solve was to cut off some of those shipping methods if they bought a student ticket. I suspect the solution would involve our box office being vigilant in checking for student price types and then taking any appropriate admin steps to chase up their ID. But great to hear everyone's suggestions. Really good thinking out there.
