It looks like even if you don’t require a postal address for record creation, if there are any postal addresses on a record one of them must be primary. When we get returned mail with no forwarding address, we are marking the address with a type of “Bad Address”. However, that is still an active, primary address that can be pulled into mailings if the correct suppressions are not in place. I don’t want to delete the bad address as it is good to have a historical record that we did have an address at one time since we do not require one. Does anyone have any ideas about how to handle this in a way that does not require suppressions?

Hey Jess,
The simplest suggestion I can think of would be to create an Inactive Account reason that is Bad Address, or something similar. The great thing about this is the account is still searchable and can be reactivated should the patron call and it's verified that that is the correct patron, etc. Also, the name shouldn't come in to lists as it's not an active account (however, every organization I've been with usually adds inactive addresses as a suppression in extractions - just to be sure).

I don't think we've come up with the perfect solution here, but this is what we do.First, e have 3 different Address Types to be used for bad addresses:- Incomplete Info (used mostly for website created accounts that didn't completely fill out their info)- Moved (when someone tells us they are moving but choose to not provide us with a new address)- Returned Mail (when we receive RTS mail that doesn't obviously fall into one of the above two categories)
These address types cause a warning icon to appear in our header so that the staff member is alerted and can verify the address when they are speaking to the customer.
Until such time as we can verify the address, we also take the extra step of prefixing the existing address content with a 0000 in front of the existing street 1 address (we also want the historical record of the address and don't want to simply delete it). By prefixing it with the 0000, we can easily sort any mail out lists by street 1 and remove the bad addresses in one fell swoop.
For example, if their street 1 address is "1234 Fake Ave" then we would have it say "0000 1234 Fake Ave" instead.

We've been thinking about this too and (bear in mind we're really new to v12) we're thinking that it would be useful to have "Invalid Address" or "Return to Sender" as a Contact Point Purpose. We have quite a few records (being in a consortium) where constituents have multiple addresses and it would be useful to mark the appropriate address as invalid rather than the constituent as a whole.
It would be easy to create an Output Set element that could be used to extract the data to exclude those addresses so marked.

We have standard suppressions that are imported to every extraction. One of them is to suppress bad addresses.
