I think you probably need to look at the ranking functionality. We haven't used it yet but I believe that you could limit the tickets to those that have only certain rank value.

Promoting the source does not prevent it from being use by people without the promotion. Anyone can use any source in an order. The promotion just makes it easy to keep track of who you sent it to.
The only option I can think of that can’t be shared is using ranking to change the MOS to one that has access to the comp price type. So you would assign a rank value to each of these specific constituents, create the special new web MOS (I’ll count adding it to performances and all the other pieces of MOS setup in that step), then associate the MOS with the rank in the TR_WEB_RANKING. When the constituents log in the mode of sale will automatically shift and they will have access to the comp price type. No one without the ranking will be able to access the comp price type.

This may be something better handled by a web ranking rather than an Offer or promotion. The reason being, shifting them into a MOS associated to the special comp price type and/or unlocking an Offer merely requires entering the source and they could as you say give those out to other people. Web ranking allows you to add a special rank type to this group of customers so that when they log in they can be shifted into a new MOS where the comp price is available. Because the ranking is tied to the customer’s account, it pretty much ensures that only those customers will have access to it (unless they gave out their login to other people which I would hope they wouldn’t). Also, web ranking is built into the login process, so there shouldn’t be any need to do any web programming to make this work.

Due to extenuating circumstances we will be offering a limited number of complimentary tickets to a number of specific out-of-town patrons. After discussing some options about the best way to do this I was asked if it was possible to give them a password and they could redeem online. The catch is, we don't want them giving out the password to all their friends and having everyone getting comp tickets! I was wondering if I build an inside source promoted to these people then create an offer for the performance, will it work online? Will it prevent other people from ordering these comps? Also, how will it work online? Will they have to log in to the system before their password will work? If this is much more complicated than I think it is please tell me and I'll tell the team to head back to the drawing board. Thanks!

If you want to use ranking for just this one thing, you don’t need to do anything fancy (like come up with a ranking scheme and a stored procedure to apply it). Just create a rank type for this special offer, then add it to the constituents in question manually (or do it in bulk in SQL Server based on your list). You can just set the rank value to 1, because the only people with the rank type will be the ones who are getting the comp offer.
Beth – We have done papering Comps with a promo code and a specific allocation and price type, and we also use Ranking for some offers that we want to make sure don’t get passed around from one person to another.
The biggest complication with Ranking is getting that sometimes people don’t understand they have accounts and they just need to log in. So they create a new one with a different e-mail address that doesn’t have ranking. (UGH!) The other thing that has been an issue is that we have had to choose if we want them to be able to purchase full price tickets to any of our other shows. What I have done so far is just activate their ranking and then inactivate the ranking when the offer is over. One time I made their ranking available to purchase or accept comps and several people bought tickets and then wondered why they were charged.
The biggest benefit of the Ranking model is definitely that they can’t pass it on to others, but that model does have some other complications that I haven’t been able to avoid.
