Ticket Fees by Payment Method?

We're looking to waive our processing fee on any cash/check orders but increase the fee for those patrons using a credit card.  I have been playing with the Fees area but do not see fee rules determined by Payment method as an option.  Does anyone have any suggestions or have any insight as to how we might go about this?

Many thanks and see you all in Orlando!!

  • Hi Mary,

I just wanted to send a warning about fees. I know that you can have issues with credit card companies if they are made aware that you are charging more of a fee for credit card purchases than you are for cash/check. You may want to make sure that you are in compliance with this before making a move. I’d hate to see your organization get dinged on the fees because of this.

  • You may want to check your merchant agreement. Many card companies prohibit doing anything to create a disincentive for using credit cards over another payment method.

  • Didn't even think this might be an issue-thank you both for bringing it to my attention.  It would be terrible if we got into hot water over something like this!

    Mary

  • And at this time, the only way to handle this would be manually.  Either manually add the fee or manually override it.

  • We are doing a similar thing here in Australia. Our promoters may choose to pass the credit card fees on to the consumer. We handle this by creating separate cash and credit card price types and then assign fees based on the Price Type.

Let me know if you would like more information on our set up.

    Thanks and regards,

    Mardi.

  • While it is true that you cannot charge more people using their credit card outright, you can charge for providing certain services – say for example order by phone or online – both methods where the traditional payment method is by credit card.  If you created Modes of Sale for phone orders and web orders you could then have different fees for those MOS and still have a lower fee (or no fee) for your window or mail MOS which is where you would be more likely to take cash and checks.  We have service charges for our phone and online MOS and no service charge for the window MOS which is allowed in your merchant agreements.  But we also have language on our website that says if you purchase in person you would avoid paying the service charge and freely give that information over the phone.

  • Thanks everyone for the insight, I really appreciate it!  I think we are going to go ahead with having fees associated by Mode of Sale and leave it at that, seems like the simplest/most compliant option.
