Ticket Limit per performance?

Is there a way to restrict the number of tickets purchased for one perofrmance in an order?

  • Just wondering if anyone may have an answer to this? The reason I ask the question is due to some ticket scalpers, who buy large quantities of tickets even though we have limits, they come back and buy more with multiple orders and different account. Just curious if anyone else out there has encountered this and what they have done to alleviate the issue?

We have talked to Commercial Media about handling this issue, but it hasn't gotten past the "specs" stage. There is nothing in Tessitura that would limit them except per order in offers.

  • Hi Amy,

It is something that is possible with some extra web coding.

When we had our website redesigned we asked for the ability to be able to stop people from buying more than x amount fo tickets per show or per Production Season. This was coded in our website and all the Box Office do now is at either level use a Content type with the maximum value of tickets allowed. The website then checks the account of the customer to see how many tickets they have booked before allowing them to purchase tickets and will stop them if they already have the max number of tickets in their account.

  • Yes...I just tested it and have it working for a special offer rate that we have. You can now use the offers tab under Modes of Sale and enact a ticket limit. Originally it would only limit it on non Web MOS but in the latest version it was rolled out to the web. You will need to get some messaging code written so you actually tell the patron what is happening rather than them getting the message that something went wrong.

There is a loophole in this because if the patron goes away and creates a brand new order they can buy another lot of tickets, etc.

True, but I think it only works if it is part of an offer.  I don’t know of a way to limit the number of tickets on one show to 4 and another show to 10 using the same default web MOS.

  • in that respect you are correct. I only ever have this around specific discounts and never a cap on a show.

We restrict tickets to a performance, based on a whole bunch of stuff...Rank triggers our MOS shift for Members, which allows them to add Member Pricetype tickets to their Cart, BUT we check previous orders and tck_hist for that performance and pricetype, and verify how many they are allowed (based on the issues field of their membership).

The problem mentioned, regarding scalpers and various accounts, is almost a different issue.  you can limit all you want, but separate accounts is tough.  Then you're better off doing some sort of unique account verification...

I'd be happy to share more of our ticket limiting, if it interests anyone, but note, our programming is fairly targeted to membership discounts, however, i'm sure you could tweak it for all constituents or whatever...

I'll also be presenting on the subject at TLCC2011, TNEW Magic!

  • You can, of course, put an offer on one performance with a max of 10 seats and another offer on another performance with a max of 4 seats.  And just set the offers to be all appeals, all sources.  Then with the right messaging you can limit sales to those performances.

You can do this all at once for a defined set of performances in Season Manager/Season Maintenance.

One thing to note is that if you are using multiple MOS/Price Type combinations and you want to limit sales in each combination, you have to set up the offer once for each combination.

You can find more information in this Ticket Pricing document.

That's pretty fancy, Chuck! I never would have thought of doing it that way.
