How do people deal with Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, etc. in your computer usage policies? This is coming up for us a lot lately with people posting during work hours. Our box office agents are using it a lot during down times. Just wondering how strict you are about this and what your policy is.
Gloria
Our box office ticket sellers don't have access to the internet from their workstations.
For those of us that do have access the general policy is: only work related internet activity it permitted. Sometimes it is hard to tell if what is being access is work related so IT reports activity to the department heads so they can look into usage on a case by case basis.
Same here. Box office reps have no internet access.
For everyone else the rule officially is: internet is there for work, but if you're on a break and choose to use the internet for personal reasons, that's fine as long as it's not illegal, pornographic, etc. Not that we ever try to determine when and how frequent breaks must be to match up with any given probably-not-work-related internet activity.
Our box office staff all have full access to the internet, everyone here does, and we don’t really mind them using it providing they are not dealing with a customer.
As for everyone else our policy is much the same as Amanda’s, although it’s not an official policy…

It is not possible to access social networking sites from within our network, it is completely locked down (apart from 3 people in our Marketing Team who manage our Facebook Fan Site and Twitter account).
Our Call Centre only have access to the websites that they need to fulfill their roles whilst at their desks or on or Counter positions. There are Mess Room computers about the building that have more access to other sites that they can use during their breaks to check web mail etc.
We also have the same policy the Internet is there for work purposes and should not be abused. Sites that are deemed to be unsuitable (illegal, pornographic, gambling) are locked down and cannot be accessed anyway.
Our HR department in currently reviewing our HR policy to update it etc.
We’re the same as Gary- everyone has access, and as long as the sales advisors aren’t dealing with a customer or aren’t tasked with a specific job, what I don’t see doesn’t hurt me… We did have an instance a while ago where some advisors were using the internet more than was necessary (having a detrimental impact on job performance), so we had to pull it off the advisors’ computers, but for now, everything’s fine.
I think it’s a useful tool- the advisors can do product knowledge research on their downtime!
Cheers,
Kathleen

Fri 9 November marks the start of Royal & Derngate’s Young America Season. Beyond the Horizon by Eugene O’Neill, arguably the first modern American tragedy, plays until Thu 15 November when it is joined in rep by Spring Storm by Tennessee Williams- a European Premiere and another first for Northampton. Plus- don’t wait for the rush; book your Christmas show early and then relax! HONK! The Ugly Duckling Musical is the perfect alternative to panto and starts on the Royal stage from Tue 1 December. But, if it’s pantomime you want then Northampton’s biggest and best panto is undoubtedly Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, now there’s something your magic mirror can’t deny! Snow White starts Fri 11 December.

We don't block any social networking sites on our organization machines. As a co-manager of our social media initiatives, we encourage our staff - especially on the front-lines - to follow or friend our organization accounts on these networks so they can get the same information as our constituents. We also get a lot of staff retweeting, posting organization Facebook posts to their personal accounts, etc. Here's an interesting article I found online about the subject:
http://www.10e20.com/blog/2009/10/15/why-companies-shouldnt-block-social-media-in-the-workplace/
It's an exciting discussion that a lot of organizations are having. We (in marketing) are currently working jointly with our PR and HR departments to write a social media policy, but it's only in a very early stage.
