Social Networking Usage Policies

How do people deal with Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, etc. in your computer usage policies? This is coming up for us a lot lately with people posting during work hours. Our box office agents are using it a lot during down times. Just wondering how strict you are about this and what your policy is.

  • Our box office ticket sellers don't have access to the internet from their workstations.

For those of us that do have access the general policy is: only work related internet activity it permitted.  Sometimes it is hard to tell if what is being access is work related so IT reports activity to the department heads so they can look into usage on a case by case basis.

  • Same here. Box office reps have no internet access.

For everyone else the rule officially is:  internet is there for work, but if you're on a break and choose to use the internet for personal reasons, that's fine as long as it's not illegal, pornographic, etc. Not that we ever try to determine when and how frequent breaks must be to match up with any given probably-not-work-related internet activity.

  • Our box office staff all have full access to the internet, everyone here does, and we don’t really mind them using it providing they are not dealing with a customer.

As for everyone else our policy is much the same as Amanda’s, although it’s not an official policy…
