Hey marketing folks:

Do you have a written policy on how and when you allow young children in the theater? If so, can you send it my way? We’re revising ours and wondering what others are doing.
Thanks!

I’d like to see that also! Thank you.

Here at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, our policy is short and simple. In our brochure, this is all we say: “Children under six are not admitted to plays or other events. For childcare information , see page 67.” On p. 67 we have several local childcare advertisers listed.
I occasionally field complaints, but very rarely. Most patrons understand and many are grateful for some age limit to optimize the theatre experience for everyone. It must be said we do not bill any shows as “family shows”—we leave it up to patrons to decide what’s appropriate and clearly direct them to “age recommendations” made by our Education Dept. for content and thematic guidance.

As a Children's Theater, we're obviously seeing more children than other organizations. Here's our general policy on the age of our young patrons:
A Note About Age Recommendations, Young Children and Babies To assist you in choosing plays most appropriate for your family, we offer age recommendations that take into consideration a specific production's performance style, length and subject matter. Our plays can be enjoyed by children, teens and adults alike, but you are the best judge of your child's ability to understand and appreciate a specific play. If you have a question about a specific production, please call our Patron Services Manager at (414) 267-2961. While we welcome children ages three and older and their families into our theater, we recommend that children under age three do not attend our performances. Please keep this in mind when making your ticket purchase.
In practice, if a family brings a young child under the age of three into our theater having already purchased tickets, we won't turn them away, but we do remind them that should the child be disruptive the parent should remove them from the theater immediately. Our ushers enforce this policy. Additionally, all patrons regardless of age (including "lap babies") must have a purchased ticket.

Here is our policy:
Children: Children are welcome at most Center events, but every patron must have a ticket, regardless of age. As a courtesy to other patrons and the performers, please bear in mind that it is not appropriate for small children to attend symphony, ballet and other performances where silence is a prerequisite for full enjoyment of the artistic experience. Babies in arms are not permitted in all cases.
We have this on our website, in our programs, as a recorded message during the hold time on our ACD phone system, and the last line is printed on the backs of our tickets. If we run into a show, which has been rare, that wants us to restrict the age of attendees then we include that information on any show specific material.
Seattle Repertory Theatre generally recommends our performances for ages 12 and older. There may be some shows that are appropriate for children ages 6-12. Seattle Rep does not allow babes in arms or children under five. For specific information of the suitability of a performance, please call the Box Office at 206-443-2222 or visit our individual show pages.
When people call in to the box office to ask about specific shows, we give them a run-down of anything in the show that might be either offensive/inappropriate for kids, or just over their heads.
We also have specific age recommendations for all of our plays online, in our brochure, and in all printed materials. Here, for example, is our recommendation for Glengarry Glen Ross (which has *lots* of material that would be unsuitable for kids) - Recommended for ages 17 and above for heavy profanity, brief sexual discussion, use of racial epithets - as opposed to The 39 Steps (which has no profanity, no nudity, no sexual innuendo really, no offensive content at all) - Recommended for ages 8 and above.

For the majority of Guthrie shows, we recommend children be at least age 12, but admit children as young as 8. For our annual production of A Christmas Carol, we admit children as young as 5. All children must have a ticket and children under 5 are never admitted.
