Do you have a written policy on how and when you allow young children in the theater?  If so, can you send it my way?  We’re revising ours and wondering what others are doing.

Thanks!

  • As a Children's Theater, we're obviously seeing more children than other organizations. Here's our general policy on the age of our young patrons:

A Note About Age Recommendations, Young Children and Babies
To assist you in choosing plays most appropriate for your family, we offer age recommendations that take into consideration a specific production's performance style, length and subject matter. Our plays can be enjoyed by children, teens and adults alike, but you are the best judge of your child's ability to understand and appreciate a specific play. If you have a question about a specific production, please call our Patron Services Manager at (414) 267-2961.  While we welcome children ages three and older and their families into our theater, we recommend that children under age three do not attend our performances.  Please keep this in mind when making your ticket purchase.

In practice, if a family brings a young child under the age of three into our theater having already purchased tickets, we won't turn them away, but we do remind them that should the child be disruptive the parent should remove them from the theater immediately. Our ushers enforce this policy. Additionally, all patrons regardless of age (including "lap babies") must have a purchased ticket.

  • Like First Stage, much of The New Victory's audience is comprised of young people, so our age recommendations vary by show and are clearly marked in our materials and on our website. We do not turn children of any age away, but everyone regardless of age is required to purchase a ticket. Parents with very young children are informed that in case they need to step out of the house with their child, they can watch the show on our live feed monitor and re-enter at an appropriate point when the child has quieted down.

Here are examples of some of the language that we use:

    From our website FAQs:
How do I know if my child is the right age for a show?

We strongly suggest that you read the descriptions carefully and take into account the age guidelines provided, as well as the show genre and length. The New Victory works with the companies that created the shows to develop age guidelines, while also considering audience feedback during past presentations.

We urge you to refrain from bringing kids younger than the minimum age indicated. For additional information on the age appropriateness of a show, call 646.223.3010.

From our season brochure's age guidelines chart:
RIGHT FOR YOU? These guidelines are designed to help you decide if a show is appropriate for you and/or your family. The New Victory has carefully considered the youngest appropriate age for each show by working closely with the artists who created each work. We are thrilled this season to offer work for very young children (see MY HOUSE and THE BUTTERFLY GARDEN) and recommend that with these exceptions the shows for "ALL AGES" are generally best enjoyed by kids aged 4 and up.

Hope this is of some help!
