Has anyone been capturing/tracking zip codes from their walk up sales customers? If so, how are you doing it? We’d like to better identify our customers so we can determine where and how to focus our marketing efforts. - Thanks Nancy
Just as a side note -
In our line of business creating a customer record for a general admission sale would not promote good customer service. On some days, we have handled over 5,000 people so creating an account for each one would not have been operationally feasible.

Thanks Heather and Christian!
Those are really good ideas. We’re not using the category field and I’ll investigate if we have any custom fields that are free for the taking.
Here’s another idea that came our way…what do you think of it? Creating a record for every zip code, (I know…take a breath…), but forcing the record number to be the zip code. This way registrars would identify the zip code from the customer and use that zip/constituent record to sell our walkups too. So for example over the year(s) record no. 55116 would have all the walkup sales in it for those constituents in that area code.
Just thought I’d pass it on.
Thanks again!
Nancy

Another possibility would be to use the one of the custom order fields. You could make it a drop down of zip codes, freeform entry, or even a drop down of 'areas' depending on your marketing wants and needs. You'd then be able to do some reporting off the custom order field without too much trouble.
This all hinges on you having an open custom data field for ticketing!

Thanks again Heather,
Yes, I agree with your assessment; it seems, the mitigating factors are (in priority order)
We really appreciate your thoughts and reality check – will let you know what we end up choosing.

Hi Nancy
At Sydney Opera House we use the Order Category field for this purpose. The Category dropdown contains every Australian Postcode (as well as every Country as we generally have a high proportion of international customers).
As a basic tool it allows us to capture demographic info on zero-constituent ‘walk-ups’.
However we also use it in our Guided Tours and Tourism groups business. We needed to be able to identify the country of origin of the customers actually taking our Guided Tours or Tourism products, not the postcode of the Tour company making the actual booking, which previously skewed our reporting.
We then developed custom reporting that when compiling demographic data first checks the Order Category field; if it is populated that’s the info we use, if its not then it checks the actual order for Country. If the Country is Australia we use the postcode, otherwise we use the Country.
I suspect the US ‘zip’ structure might be a little more complex than oz postcodes, but for us this process has greatly increased our ability to do solid demographic reporting. And using a field on the main order screen I think has been an important factor in getting staff to actually use it, custom tabs tend to be a bit easier to ignore …!

Peter

Nancy -
Hmm. That's an interesting idea - now that I'm done hyperventilating about the concept. ;) I think in reality looking at the flow of how people sell tickets and how you might want to report on zip codes the idea of creating an account for each zip code would be extremely strenuous for about the same pay off. I'm trying to think if there are any benefits to doing it by account vs a field within an account and the only thing I can think of is possibly reporting and even that I'm not thinking of oodles reasons.
It'd be interesting to hear what other people think and if there are organizations out there that do track zip codes for walk up...

Peter, Thanks greatly for sharing!
I love your idea of combining postal codes and Country names – we may do the same thing, but may include neighborhoods, probably US states as well. I agree with using a field that’s right on the main page of the order; what ever offers ease of entry is the way to go. Your custom reporting sounds brilliant! If you’re able and willing, we’d love to take a look at the SQL procedure that does the compilations!
Thanks again and best to you and yours.
The Science Museum of Minnesota is especially appreciative.

Hello all,
My org is in a similar situation with the requirement of collecting Postcodes/Countries without a constituent ID.
Is the 'Order Category' field still the go-to-solution for thus case?
Cheers,
Nicholas
We at the Science Museum are still using it. It's far from ideal, but it's the best solution we've come up with in terms of speed and efficiency when trying to complete transactions as quickly as possible. Reporting remains a challenge since our zip code data is spread between the Order Category field and the constituent accounts, but we make it work.
Good to know, thanks Kjersten :)
Hi Peter,
We use the same system to capture post codes at acmi (the Australian Centre for the Moving Image). I was wondering if you knew how to generate a report that would specifically allow you to see what postcaodes where collected for each buyer type?
Thanks
Diamantino
Right now we do all of our reporting out of T-Stats. Order Category is a standard dimension and it would be easy to filter by constituent type or whatever else you need to break out. As noted in my post above you have to remember that some of your zip data still lives on constituent records so make sure you're clear in exactly what you're pulling from where.
