Ticket scanning hangs after a few scans

In the last 2 weeks when we had big events we had the ticket scanners fail after a few scans. Is there a limit to how many tickets the scanners can handle at one time? We checked the wifi system and the unit and the signal strength is strong with no drops. We didn't do any updates to the Nscan application on the handhelds or Tessitura backend either. Not sure what is causing this issue, has anyone seen anything like this before?

  • Hey John, Well I have battled scanners often in our building. We experience some similar issues when all three venues are up. We made many adjustments, but the following suggestions is what I think had the most impact on maintaining a stable connection. I would make sure you are not broadcasting the SSID and you could apply some MAC filtering to make sure the scanners are the only thing communicating to the AP's. There is a timeout setting within Nscan, which you can always increase (they were at 8 and increased to12). Make sure that you have complete wireless coverage.

  • Hi John,

When you say its failing after a few scans, is it that it gets stuck and hangs there or its just not working outright?

We have had similar issues with large events and thousands of people at once. We've done a lot of research and deduced that its not the scanners themselves , but mainly it comes down to the sheer volume of people within the wifi signal proximity. Even though the signal is showing that its strong, it still can be interfered with because of the masses of people. Things we've done to try and help the issue are:

-Make sure the Access Points for the WiFi are mounted up higher, sometimes repositioning them helps too.

-We've noticed that sometimes if there are multiple AP's close to each other they fight each other for the strongest signal to be delivered to the scanner which in turn causes the scanner to be hung up when the demand on the signal is greater.

-If possible, position the person doing the scanning facing the AP instead of having their back towards it

-Space out people doing the scanning if they are standing in very close proximity of each other

-Sometimes the person scanning the tickets is moving at a faster speed then the scanner is and then they get nervous when it says "waiting." Its usually just a few second pause, but it usually comes right back.

Not sure if that helps at all, but I thought I would share.

  • I believe the timeout was set 12 but it's been a while where would I look for this setting?

  • Thanks, we do have the AP's high up and we have the ushers standing apart from each other but the line does queue up fairly fast.
