Renewals online

Hello

Does anyone out there undertake membership renewals online (not subscriptions)? If so, what's your business process?

    Hi Beth

     

    Yes, we are using the membership functionality in Tessitura and are just about to look at gift memberships online. But as we’re doing this, we thought we would expand the scope to allow renewals.

     

    It does sound like you do exactly what we would like to do.  How does the functionality work online i.e. do you have a separate area/ page for renewals, do you log in first, do you send a renewal letter first? So many questions!

    Hi Ruth,

    Yes, there are a lot of questions around this kind of thing.

    We already had "online" renewals in our previous system; I put it in quotation marks because it wasn't live into the system, but at least the customer could fill out an online form.  We stayed pretty close to that model in implementing our online renewals/purchases.

    To answer the specific questions you asked:
    - We do still send paper renewals.  We send three: one a month before they expire, one in the month of expiration, and one after they have been expired for one month.  We hope to do e-renewals someday, but aren't there yet; the tenative plan is to send the email reminder instead of the hard copy 1st renewal notice.
    - You have to log in to renew, so we spent a lot of time thinking through how a customer might hit the webpage and how to make them login.  In the end, we ended up starting everyone off at the general "membership" page and doing one link for "renew" that asks you to login first, and a different link for "new" that does not force the login.  You can see it at http://www.smm.org/members - the links are in the right hand nav bar or the top hotlinks.  Feel free to play - you can go all the way through the purchase point without messing anything up.
