Luggage Policy

We have several high profile event coming up in our city and we are looking to modify our luggage policy.  What is the policy at your venue?  Do you allow guests to bring bags of all sizes in?  Do you keep them for the guests?  If you do not allow any large bags inside, has there been negative feedback from guests?

  • The Met does not allow guests to bring in luggage.  From our Visitor Guidelines:

    • Large umbrellas and large backpacks must be checked (coat check facilities are available at all locations).
    • Small backpacks may be brought into the galleries if they are carried on your front or side.
    • Luggage and musical instruments are not permitted in the galleries and will not be accepted at the coat check.

There are certainly guests that are unhappy with the policy, but it is not something that we consider changing as it is a security issue.

  • At the Walker we have lockers that will hold up to medium sized bags.  We will take larger suitcases behind the desk as needed for visitors who are on their way out of town and have luggage with them.  We don't allow bags larger than 11x17, umbrellas, or backpacks in the galleries.

I'm sure we would have upset visitors if we were unable to take suitcases, although I notice that a lot of people call to check if we take large bags as it is common for museums not to check such items.  We have a fairly low volume, so it hasn't become an issue for us.  We have had to come up with solutions when there are large rentals that may have luggage--in that case we require the rental client to setup a desk where they take luggage.

  • We unfortunately do not have lockers that accommodate suitcases for our traveling visitors. We also do not have a coat check option. Therefore, due to them not being allowed to be in the Museum unattended, these visitors are unable to stay unless they can leave their luggage in a car. I wish there was a better option. Umbrellas are just left at the door in containers.
