We were working on a custom build for volunteer tracking when we shut down in March. There isn't an out of the box way to do it, unfortunately. Hello there! The standard functionality for managing "workers" (volunteers, staff, etc.) is through Resource Scheduling. This feature was designed for booking-based worker assignments, such as volunteers assigned to a field trip group. We have a great video series called Basics of Education, and the segment “Part 6: Scenario: Field Trips” shows exactly how Resource Scheduling works in that context and how to set it up. Additionally, when we released this feature in 2017, we created a much longer webinar with more details that may also be helpful.

Anne mentioned a custom solution -- we have certainly created custom solutions for managing volunteer shifts outside of bookings, such as volunteers who are stationed in galleries, doing office work, staffing the information booth, etc. You can email hello@tessituranetwork.com to get a quote if you're interested.
