"Information is beautiful" - Datavis is art

I stopped by some really interesting data viz on the Information is Beautiful site

Most beautiful news of the year is a great way of thinking about and learning tree diagrams - something we can do in Tessitura analytics.  And if you have a look in the bottom right corner you'll see the simple excel spreadsheet that shapes that chart.

Scatter charts are another visualisation I use all too rarely but looks beautiful (and scary) in this data breach graph

The Stacked Bar chart of Diversity in Tech is really clean and makes a bit of an impact.

  • I'm so glad you started this topic - I love looking at beautiful data and the creativity behind it. Especially being in the arts, where we're surrounded by creatives, it shows how data can become an art form of its own.
If you haven't read Dear Data by Giorgia Lupi and Stefanie Posavec, it is a joy to read and look through their project. Beautiful data doesn't have to be highly technical, sometimes it just takes a pencil and paper.
The Data Visualization Society (which has a free membership) puts out an email newsletter called "Nightingale" which has some great articles and its own iteration of the Information Is Beautiful Awards.
There is also a free newsletter from the Washington Post by Philip Bump called "How to Read This Chart" that explores a particular chart each week. At the of the email, he includes "Chartpourri" containing just a bunch of fun, random graphs that he's encountered throughout the week. (This week included a heat map of every mention of the word "whale" by page in Moby Dick.)
