I see on sites that some people have the patron log in before looking for seats and some after seats are in thier cart and they're ready to check out. I understand the reasoning behind both, but I'm wondering if anyone has a combo plater - either or - kinda like when you're looking for a flight on aa.com you can choose to log in before you get your flight options or after. So is anyone offering this type of log in?
We maintain a login button on all pages (of the e-commerce section of our site), so the patron can log in at any time. We allow people to look for seats while not logged in, but you must log in to _reserve_ a seat (at the point where you click to reserve the seats you are redirected to a login/register screen if you are not already logged in).
As Mark mentioned, a lot of sites use anonymous login to allow users to build a cart first, and only force login/registration at the point of checkout (when addresses and credit cards need to be entered).
On thing to bear in mind, and this is important for us, is that your login status affects your Mode of Sale -- which may cause some events/performances to be available or unavailable.
We do this the same way. www.theatreworks.org
