Gift shops

Hello fellow Tessiturians! Posted this to the Marketing forum last week but didn't see any responses, so here's another go...

Just an informal questionnaire for you all.

Do you have a lobby gift shop? Or some other form of merchandising operation? Who manages it? Marketing? Ticketing? FOH? What kind of "stuff" is the most popular?

We are slowly but surely trying to introduce a gift shop to our lobby but at this point, we're not sure who should be in charge of it and what kinds of things it should have. There is a great grassroots effort on the part of our production artisans to sell their own creations, but there is also a desire to have Rep-branded merch and show-specific merch.

Any suggestions or pointers would be appreciated.

Thanks!

  • Patrick,

We do have a gift shop at Seattle Rep – it’s actually managed by our volunteer organization.  They order most of the merchandise, staff the shop with volunteers, and keep track of sales – any proceeds from the shop are then donated back to the Rep at the end of each fiscal year.

We have all kinds of stuff for sale in our gift shop – some show-related, a lot not.  Since we don’t do the ordering, we don’t have a huge say in what they stock – we do allow them to sell merchandise that we’ve made for shows or seasons (coffee mugs, t-shirts, all of our posters, etc.), but the rest of the merchandise is totally up to them.

As far as I know, none of the current merchandise is from anyone who works here – except for the theatre-specific stuff, it’s all from outside vendors.
