promo codes - are they reaching an unintended audience?

How are promo codes being managed/ controlled at your venue? And, are you finding that promo codes are being shared broadly to those for whom it was not intended?

Many thanks,

  • Not my current venue (we pretty much never offer discounts), but my previous venue:  either the box office manger (me) or my assistant manager would create the codes at the request of a member of the marketing team, or a team lead. The marketing team knew consistently what information we needed, so I didn't make them fill out a form, but for everyone else, I did have a basic form that I had them fill out so we were sure they knew exactly what they wanted to be able to accomplish with the code, and so that we didn't have questions about it.

I made cheat sheets for the box office to use, and gave simpler versions to all staff members.  It was generally understood that you didn't give out promo codes to the general public, but we would sometimes make exceptions for donors or very specific reasons.

    Does that answer your question?

  • Thank you! It is very helpful. Did you find that the promo codes were being abused in any way (outside of your staff)? So, for example - was there ever concern that people who had received a special promo were sharing it with others that may not qualify for it?
