Visually Impaired Special Needs Seating

Hi Everyone,

We're wondering, does anyone routinely hold seats close to the stage for patrons with visual impairments or other special needs to purchase? If so, are they sold at the same price types (single ticket, subscriber and discounted) that are available to the general public or do you have a Special Needs discount of some kind?

We currently hold seats in multiple sections for patrons using wheelchairs or requiring aisle seating, and of course hold a block of seats for our Sign-Interpreted performances, but nothing in the first couple of rows for patrons who may have reduced field of vision, extreme nearsightedness, Autism etc. We get a few requests like this each season, and while accommodations are made on a case by case basis, it would be helpful to have a more consistent policy in place.

Thanks in advance for your help!

We do hold some seats for customers who are visually impaired close to the stage.  We will be moving toward having some seats in an allocation instead of a hold in the near future so that customers can purchase them on the web as well.  This is a complicated issue that I am happy to report will be a topic at the next Tessitura conference.

  • We don't hold seats exclusively for visually-impaired patrons (like we do for wheelchair & ASL), but we do offer a discounted price if someone mentions that they are blind or extremely visually-impaired at the time they purchase tickets.

  • Thanks Nicole, I'm sure we'll have someone attending that conference session!

Do you sell those seats at regular prices, or do you have a special needs discount?

Regular price.  There are some instances where it could be reduced to match the price level of the seats the customer wanted to purchase but could not access due to inaccessibility, but the overall concept is equal access not preferred, or special access.

  • We do an audio described performance during each run, and have a couple of seats held in the front row should any our visually impaired guests request them.  Discounted tickets are available for this specific performance, and our visually impaired guests listen to the audio description on special headsets different from our usual assistive listening devices.

  • At the Young Vic, as seating is always unreserved, we will hold off specific seats of the customer's preference if they request it. The signs on the seats ("These seats are reserved for a customer with access needs in the name of Campbell") are removed five minutes prior to the start of the performance. A note is made as a Customer Service Issue: the Duty Manager pulls that report prior to the show and reserves those seats.

We offer a free ticket for a companion if the customer is not capacble of navigating the building on their own, in which case their ticket is charged at the full price. If they CAN navigate the building on their own, there's a reduced price we use for their ticket only.

We also do a captioned performance and an audio described performance if the run is long enough to justify it: but the above rules remain the same.

    Hope this helps!

    Hi Lilaia,

For all of the Guthrie’s season productions we offer two Audio Described performances and we do hold some seats near the stage for these performances. Tickets are discounted for the patron using the service and one companion. We also offer AD (as well as ASL) subscription packages.

Outside of these designated performances, we do not specifically hold seats for patrons who are visually impaired. We do have wheelchair and accessible seating locations, in all price zones, and one location is front row. These are available for all performances and are sold at regular price.
