Constituent search bu credit card number

Hi folks,

How do you search for constituents via their credit card number now that we only see the first 6 and last 4 digits of the CC?  I have tried wild carding using % and * and ______ but nothing is returned.

The help system isn't clear on this!

  • Nick,

Many thanks for the reply but this doesn't really help much I'm afraid.  On average, given the size of our database, searching for the last four digits only returns (on average) in excess of 150 constituent records per search.

Is there any way of searching using wildcards?  Given the move towards PCI compliance, the likelihood of having the complete number to search by - especially when trying to investigate CC number information available via the payment gateway - is low.

  • Oh -- it wasn't clear to me that you were searching based on data that you were receiving from the payment gateway.

It occurs to me that the answer to your problem may involve a completely different solution. That is to say, investigating charges from your payment gateway should not have to involve searching for constituents on last 4 card digits using the client interface.

My approach would be to use the numbers stored by the payment gateway that directly reference tessitura tables -- often called "Reference Number" or "Ticket Number" in your gateway. This can be used to trace a card authorization to a tessitura transaction, payment, and ultimately order or contribution and constituent. But unless you have some custom reporting set up, doing this trace is only possible by querying the database directly.

That said, are you on version 12.5? Instead of using the constituents module, try using an order search -- in 12.5 there are some new options for searching for orders by card number (or by gateway transaction ID, actually), including a "partial card number" option that lets you search on first 6+last 4. Since the order search screen is also filtered by date, you won't have as many false results as searching in the constituents module.

  • <sigh> If only life were so simple!

I'd not seen the Order Search by partial CC no.  The joy of our payment gateway is that we only see the first six and last two digits of the CC number so this doesn't work either.  Maybe it's time for an enhancement request!

    Thanks for the advice though.
