Average time for each scan

We are getting complaints from our Front of House team that the scanners are too slow.  One of the questions I have been asked is what is the average time it takes for a scan to occur.  So the number of seconds for each ticket to be scanned and the appropriate response to come back?

If someone has this data that would be great, or, if they know where I can find this information that would be great.

Thanks

Margaret

For us the scan response is very fast, sometimes nearly instantaneous, and I would say probably only 2 seconds at the slowest.  But, the maximum number of scanners we have in use at any one time, is eight.  Typically we only have 4-6 in use at a time.

Is your team seeing any “communication error/cannot communicate with server” messages, or is it just that the responses are very slow to be returned to the scanners?  I believe the NScan documentation states that the default timeout setting is 8 seconds before a communication error message will be returned to the unit.

Do you know if your environment is set to have the scanners connect to wireless access points that are dedicated ONLY to the MAC addresses of the scanners?  We had trouble (lots of timeouts and slowness) when we tried to “share” usage of our wireless access points with both scanners and “public traffic” (cellphone/tablets/devices that our patrons brought with them).  Since we installed separate access points for the scanners, we have had very few scanner issues.

  • In the past we have seen almost instantaneous responses. However, over the last year or so we have seen a degradation in service related to network connectivity.  We are working on these issues. However, I would not say we have beaten the challenges.  Penny’s Comments look very interesting.  We have also been trying the use of non-dynamically allocated IP addresses.  So we have been hand coding IP addresses into each unit.

We have our scanners connecting to a dedicated wifi channel and the issue appears to be occurring at only three doors.  I will look at the default time out setting and see if it has been changed from 8 seconds.

    Thanks
