Login question

Hi all,

I'm working on some data cleanup before V 11, and I'm flummoxed.  I'm finding that I can set a particular email as the primary email address and login on record A, and then I am able to enter that same email address on record B.  But according to the documentation, and to my previous experience, that shouldn't be possible.  Any ideas what I might be missing?

Thanks!

Beth

  • Aaaaah.  I know we occasionally have a user try to enter an email on the general tab and get an error to the effect of "that email is already in use on a login," but I couldn't reproduce the error. Thinking about what you've said, I'll be that only happens if the duplicate accounts both already had a login, and then you try to change the email on record A to one that matches record B.  Because record A already had a login, it automatically tries to change the email tied to it if you overwrite the one tied to the login, causing it to trigger the login restriction even though it looks like it's only related to the email address change.

    Thanks all!  Problem solved!

    Hi Beth,

You can add an email address to as many constituent records as you want, but you can only select is as the email associated with a login once per login type.

Login usernames must be unique, per login type, across all constituents.   If you are using email address as the login name (i.e. what you type in the Login field), you can only do that once per login type, but you could still enter that email address as an email address (on the Electronic screen) to as many constituent records as you want.

So the restrictions are on logins, not email addresses.

    Make sense?
