We've been self-hosted all along. Not that there was any other option in 2004. We started hosting on our own physical hardware in our facility, then moved to a virtual environment in a Rackspace datacenter. After that we moved back on premise on a virtual platform for a few years as a transitionary step, then migrated our virtual environment into Azure where we are today. It's been a journey!
Self-hosted organizations encounter unique circumstances that benefit from communication with our peer organizations. This is especially true when it comes to cyber security, and regulatory compliance.

We are self hosted at the Met as well. Has always worked out well for us. Our Tess environments are all running on vmware except for our live production SQL database server. We seem to have always gotten better performance running that on physical hardware, especially times when running long, time consuming scripts. That said our live DB is over 700GB.

We self-hosted Tessitura from 2004 - 2020. Early years we had a physical server for each Tessitura component. Eventually migrated everything to Hyper-V. We had multiple Hyper-V hosts running in different buildings on our campus to improve redundancy. Some recent governance changes on our campus necessitated moving the system to RAMP.
