Gender Options

Apologies if this has been asked before but I couldn't dig it up in searching the site and documentation.

Is there a system table or other area that will allow me to add options to the gender dropdown?

I'm afraid the "Male" and "Female" values are hard-coded in the application, and cannot be added to or overridden.

  • These values are in the System Tables tr_prefix and they are editable

  • Thank you for the responses.  Looks like I'm out of luck on this one.

  • Hello,

Just following up on this post from 2010 where it was advised that Gender options can't be customized.

A few versions later, are Gender options are now able to be defined by licensees?

I can't see any reference to it in documentation and can see that M & F options are still hard coded in TR_SALUTATION_FORMAT, so am assuming not, but just wanted to double check.

    Warm Regards,
    Beau @ Arts Centre Melbourne

  • Hey Beau,

The out-of-the-box gender options are still fixed as Male and Female.  We don't use those and instead store gender in a custom attribute where we have more control over the options.

In our database, I have seen a few instances where the Gender is "U", but I have no idea how it was done and I haven't been able to replicate it.

  • +1 on having this as a discussion topic at TLCC - in the Education world at First Stage we have long asked for a student's gender, and are now starting to receive forms with "N/A" or "?" marked instead. Diversity & Inclusion seems to be a big topic and something that definitely needs to be embraced in the world of data!

  • But doesn’t it also raise the question over why you would want to record gender at all, not to mention the inherent problems with guessing at gender?..  Other than a ‘nice to know’ for Development purposes, how would your marketing change?  J

(this might make a good MKT discussion topic at the conference?)

    Cheers,

    Kathleen

  • Thanks everyone for your feedback on the topic - very interesting discussion!

  • In this day and age, hard coding only male or female (or blank) options seems out of touch with the world we live in! Does anyone know if an enhancement request has been submitted for this? Martin
  • Hi Martin, Arts Centre Melbourne submitted an enhancement request for this in October. “As an industry that encourages engagement and community across all areas we would like to be able to take a more inclusive approach when providing options for customers and the team to choose from in the Gender field on a constituent record. Add a system table (or similar) that allows licensees to define options for the Gender drop down selection in addition to the existing Male and Female options. We would like to be able to add options for people who identify as gender neutral.” Kim
  • Hi there Kim - thanks for letting me know. Hope all is well with you down there in Melb - see you at ANZTRUC (if not before!) Martin
  • +1 from me too on expanding the gender dropdown for more inclusivity.

  • +1 from me too.

I recall this topic being part of the Administrators’ discussion session at the EU conference at the Southbank Centre years ago (possibly around 2012) and there was widespread support for a change to the gender drop down at that time as well.
