Upgrading from Windows server 2003 to 2012

Hello all,

I'm aware we have left this late and it's also a bit of a nebulous request but we are upgrading our Tessitura server, seat, payment and report servers from windows server 2003 to 2012 due to the end of life support. I wanted to ask if anyone else had done this type of project before and may have any advice or tips.

We obviously can't do an in-place upgrade as the 2003 boxes are 32 bit so are planning to build a new 2012 boxes and install SQL 2008R2 on then and move from the old machine to the new one. We are a virtual environment so will obviously be taking snapshots which we can fall back on if needed.

Any experiences or suggestions would be gratefully received.

Many thanks

We did a similar upgrade earlier this year, i.e. new consolidated VMs, with upgraded OS, .Net, etc.. TIM makes this pretty simple, actually, though there are still a few ini files that require hand editing. Making sure the DNS pointed to the new servers at the crucial moment was probably the fiddly-est part of the upgrade here.

  • Hi Chris,

Thanks for the reply. The DNS side does worry me a bit although we are working on a test environment that should provide some guidance.

  • Hi Jamie,

We did something similar back when we upgraded to Tessitura v11. One suggestion I have is to document the setup of each VM step-by-step. It's a bit tedious, but it leaves little room for speculation if you are trying to recall how something was configured or if you need to duplicate the steps later for some reason.

I would also suggest going with Windows Server 2012 R2 and SQL Server 2014 (or at least 2012) if possible, particularly if you are using v12 and have plans to go to v14 at some point next year. Nothing older than SQL Server 2014 will be supported with Tessitura v14 from what I understand, plus Microsoft ended mainstream support for SQL Server 2008 R2. Likewise, Windows Server 2012 R2 is a bit more refined than 2012, not to mention newer. All of those versions have been out for quite a while and are stable. And, you will get longer life out of your setup that way.

    Good luck!
