I'm still trying to wrap my brain around this concept.
In one sentence what is the difference between affiliations and associations?
This is the sill way I remember the difference
Associations are between the same record type-Individual to Individual, Household to Household, etc. The double s in Association stands for same.
Affiliations are between different record types-Individual to Household. The double f in Affiliations stands for different.

Hi Kyle
Conceptually, I don't think Affiliations are necessarily intended to imply ownership or subjection, or any kind of hierarchical relationship. That's up to how you use them.
As I understand it, Affiliations and Associations are just two different flavours of Relationship, with the only major difference being that Affiliations record relationships between individuals and groups (whether the groups are Households or corporations or whatever else you like to define) and Associations record relationships between indivs or between groups. Affiliations have some extra functionality which means that you can use them more effectively for superordinate-subordinate, or group-membership type relationships, but that's not a necessary part of their conceptual baggage.
So that an Affiliation between an Indiv and a group is, actually, what you're after - it is, effectively, a (version of) an association, but that can be used for relationships between an indiv and a group constituent.

We've just moved away from that. There was a 'Friend' affiliation type, but I've deactivated it as the person who is the friend is not 'owned' or 'subject' to the household, but entirely separate - they are 'Associated'.
There should be an exception that individuals can be associated with Households, as in many ways Households act as Individuals. Equally why does it make more sense to be able to 'Associate' two households together, and two individuals, but not Household to Individual?
