Can anyone direct me to anything written down about why the Season Overview figures should be taken with a pinch of salt and not used as exact sales figures? I know I've read something but I can't for the life of me figure out where!

Further to this, the Comps Detail screen is missing out one of the comp reasons that has been used.

Well, I don't know what could be going on. I checked the troubleshooting page of the help system and it has some pointers about layered price maps with the same designation and sales over capacity. But it sounds like the figures you are seeing in Overview are lower than expected. Is that right? I'm guessing you are missing sales like you are missing the comp reason.
Which report are you trying to balance to? Is this the only show that doesn't balance?
