Does anybody use Tableau?

Hi all,

Does anybody use Tableau to visualise data? We've recently started using it and I'd like to exchange ideas with other users.

Thanks,

Thanos

  • Thanos,

We are new to it as well.  I would love to exchange ideas.

  • Jon & Thanos,

It's great to hear others thinking and working on these issues.

There was a small group of us that found each other at TLCC2014. As a result We've just opened a self service Business intelligence group on Tessituranetwork.com to discuss the use of tools like Tableau, Microsoft Power BI and other tools (like R, cliqVIEW..) that can be used for ad-hoc visualization and more sophisticated data analysis.

We have also experimented with Tableau. However, it appears to be quite expensive for a large scale roll out. Which version are you using public, online, or one of the locally hosted versions?

  • Hello both,

We are using Tableau desktop and there are only two of us who use it. Unfortunately I didn't attend the Tessitura conference to meet you guys. We have the UK conference at the end of October so I hope to find some Tableau users there.

Have you managed to connect with Tessitura or are you working with excel sheets?  At the moment I'm mainly woring on sales curves and recently connected to our Google Analytics account.

    Thanks,

    Thanos

  • Hi all, for anyone interested in the self-service BI group Tom referenced, you can find it here: http://www.tessituranetwork.com/Community/groups/self-service_business_intelligence/default.aspx

We were looking at Tableau earlier this year but so far I've not been able to justify the expense. I don't have much to offer in the way of useful experience but if others are finding it useful I'd love to hear some ideas I could bring back to my team!

  • Hello,

Sorry it has taken me so long to reply.

At the moment we are using Tableau to produce sales curves. We analysed a number of productions and then created aggregated sales curves which we use to compare against shows that are currently on sale. It’s pretty much an attempt to forecast a production’s sales pattern which has proven to be very useful for marketing and finance departments.

We are also interested in uploading our survey data into Tableau and try to find correlations between audience feedback and sales.

    Thanks,

  • Very Cool!!!

We have been doing the sales curve thing in excel for a number of years now. We call it the Magic Spreadsheet. This was a predecessor to the sales curves in the RMA. We are using both now. However we like our "magic spreadsheet". Because it includes budget numbers. Which leads me to the next question. How do you "source" your data. Do you let users of Tableau go directly against tables. Do you use a view? Is this real time data or against a test environment that is regularly updated?

The second one also sounds interesting. Would you intend to use Tableau? Or another tool more designed for textual analysis?
