Donor Advised Funds

Wondering about best practices from other organizations who record all gifts to the acct from which the check is written (and soft credit to directing individual).

When recording a gift from a donor advised fund, do you soft credit to the Foundation the Fund is at in addition to the Individual directing the gift?

Thanks for your thoughts,

  • Keri, we enter the DAF as an Organization and use the entire name of the fund on two lines.

Joe and Janet Smith Charitable Gift Fund
    Fidelity Charitable  . . .

Then we go to the Relationships tab and establish an affiliation with the individuals, Joe and Janet. We enter the gift on the Fund record and credit the Smith household.

    Joanne,

Thanks for your response!  That makes sense.  We currently designate which donors give via two specific community foundations which is maybe why we are soft crediting them.  Maybe it's time to question why we do that... :).
