Online Fundraising Platforms

Hi all,

We've been receiving gifts recently through a number of online fundraising platforms like Network for Good, Razoo, Your Cause, Just Give, etc. I wanted to make sure we're crediting these correctly in Tessitura. How do others process these types of contributions? It seems to be that the individual donor should be hard credited, and then the giving platform should get a soft credit. But I wanted to be sure!

Thanks for the feedback.

  • Hi Sara,

Our best practice policy is to enter the gift on the account from which we received the check, and to soft credit the donor. This mainly helps us out with processing acknowledgements because if, for example, someone makes their gift through United Way or another donor advised fund, they'll usually receive their tax letter from that organization/company. We have a specific type of acknowledgement for these soft creditees that's a "thank you only" format, with no tax information, for gifts made through another fundraising platform. That's just our policy, but whatever's the most efficient for you, your finance office, and you donors could of course be different. Just offering some feedback!

    Thanks,

    Tele

  • Most of these function as Donor Advised Fund – if you read the info on the sheets they mention they are DAFs   so we treat them as such.

  • One correction Your Cause is actually a matching gift platform similar to EasyMatch or CyberGrant -- so that would be soft credited like any other match in the matching gift companies record.

Just Give is a DAF for Amex

The other thing that is coming over the transom is AmazonSmile--  certain purchases made via Amazon will accrue money for various non-profits – the amount is VERY small and it is not credited to any individual – it is from AmazonSmile Fdn
