How to manage a pledge shared by two individuals - v16

Hi all!  How would you suggest managing a pledge that is shared by two individuals who do not share a household?  The pledge was made about 8 months ago by donor #1 who has paid about 1/4 of the balance.  The remaining balance will be paid by donor #2.  Both donor #1 and donor #2 need to receive credit for the full pledge amount.

I know that you cannot use a contribution to pay off another person's pledge so I fear I need to adjust the pledge down so the balance is $0 and then make a new pledge on donor #2 for the balance amount.  But then when pulling giving reports they won't each be credited for the total, but instead only for the amount they paid off.  I could also see a scenario down the line where donor #1 decides that they will actually make some more payments on the pledge which would require further adjustments/more confusion.

Any suggestions are appreciated.  Thank you!

  • We've had this happen before too, and it's tricky. Honestly not even sure our scenario is best. In this scenario, we would reduce the pledge by the amount paid and book as a new contribution on donor 2's account. We also would soft credit each gift to both 1 and 2 (the credit on the non-owner). Each receives a program name at the total giving level, ensuring that they are both credited at the full amount. We thankfully have known the split of the gift either prior to booking or mid-gift so we only had to do one adjustment. But if you think donor #1 will pay more, I would just reduce by payments.

We're still in v15 so not sure if there is something else in v16 that would make this slightly easier or not.
