I work in Development for a mid-sized theatre company. The organization has historically resisted creating constituent records for children under 18 in Tessitura, even though we do have the option to add a "child member" to a household. We are now working on expanding our education offerings, and are weighing the pros and cons of creating child records and connecting them to the households of our patrons who are parents or grandparents and introduce their children or grandchildren to our organization.
There has been some concern within our organization around accidentally crossing boundaries while managing data for under-18 constituents. I was wondering if anyone had recommended practices within your organizations that you would be willing to share? How do you manage the data and information of minors in an ethical way?
We use Tessitura for our Academy and Education programs registration. This has been extremely helpful for our Development team because they can then see the details of donors’ child constituents involved in our programs. We follow all COPPA laws with regard to data collection and usage, and use alternate methods to collect sensitive HIPPA-protected information. Let me know if you’re looking for additional information.
