Membership Campaigns discrepancy between Fund Activity report and Analytics Memb Cube

Hi folks,

We're rolling out Membership dashboards (customised, not the shipped dashboards) to our Dev team soon and I'm struggling with some discrepancies between the Fund Activity report and the Membership cube.

I'm trying to use the same parameters for both, so for Fund activity to use Membership Campaign, and then the same in my widget. Dashboard filters are off for my widget, so not interfering, and I have made sure I'm using the same Membership organisation in the widget as in the Campaign.

It looks like there is an outstanding pledge balance (due to ongoing Direct Debit payment schedules) for our 2021/22 FY and it looks like the Dashboard may not be recognising that (to the tune of £29k), as if it did, 2021/22 would match exactly.   But there is also an earlier year (2019/20) discrepancy of about £25k and I'm just stumped.

Can anyone advise if Fund Activity report and the Membership cube might be treating the data differently at all?  Eg around pledges, or anything else?

Any pointers gratefully received....

Cheers

Melanie

  • When debugging ( esp. for finance) I try to pull the most granular version of both in excel (ie: Fund activity report detail by contribution ref ID and adding that same detail to my pivot widget) and matching them side to side to find the specific discrepancies.

Contributions are always hard because of the 3 dates,  transaction,  contribution and post. But if you can aggregate by campaign it'll help comparing apples and apples

  • Thanks for the tip Heath - I hadn't yet got into the fun of the excel comparisons, but doing that revealed that part of a high level member's membership (worth thousands) for the 19-20 year was actually attached to a 20-21 contribution, so fund activity wasn't picking it up but Analytics membership total amt was, and also that Analytics doesn't seem to register Memberships that have been merged (see screenshot), whereas Fund activity does still output those amounts.

I think I might have to settle with saying to Development that the broad picture is correct, and we can't make a direct comparison with the fund activity report and Analytics membership as we're comparing Gala apples with Granny Smith apples, as I don't think I can pull contribution amount out through the membership cube in the same way (looks like you can only pull out amounts on the membership tab in Tess, not on the contribution tab)?

    Thanks again!

  • That's interesting - My thought is that Membership level is driven by the Memberships utility on a schedule and pushes the membership up depending on a calculation of Contributions to certain Campaigns during a time period.

BUT if there is a merge and contributions get squiched together from two records, unless you run the procedure that is the engine of the Memberships utility again to recalculate historically then they are going to stay different.  Unless you manually adjust the membership level to be in line with the contribution record.

    That's at least my theory

  • Thanks Heath, yes could be.  I'm hoping Dev team will go for 'this is broad brush stroke stuff'!
