Flex packages on the web

Hello, we are re-designing how we sell flex ( build your own packages) on the web.  We would like to enable website customers to select different number of seats ( let's say they are buying 5 min required performances and for two of them they want 3 seats, for other performances  just 2 seats). We are getting Web API error trying to implement this.

Is this possible ? Workarounds , suggestions?

Thank you ,

Sabina

I think you're running up against the Tessitura definition of a flex package.

What we do to facilitate our users buying more tickets to some shows is that after they've purchased their packages (or have qualifying packages in their cart) they can go back and buy tickets at a discounted "Subscription Add-on" price to any relevant show.

Another option would be to explore the discounts, particularly in light of the new discounting rules coming to V12: that is abandon packages (as a Tessitura object) entirely and build your "packages" around whatever complex rules you want.

  • Do Tessitura's flex packages allow each event to be seated in different sections/zones and have different prices?  We currently do not sell these as packages because we also need to allow different quantities of tickets per show (i.e. one show with 2 seats, one show with 3, one show with 4, etc.).   The add on for the extra seat is an interesting idea but I'm wondering how the web would ensure that seat is seated with the seats in the flex package?

Not sure what you mean by that, but the answer is probably yes: do you mean can you seat PerfA in a different section to PerfB in a package?  The answer is yes (we do).  Can you buy two packages and have each PerfA seat in a different section?  Yes, we do, though we don't make it particularly easy (you can kind-of pull it off in SYOS, not with Best Seat or Unseated).

We have essentially three ways to seat online.  For an early period of our sales, all sales are unseated (buyers specify price zone only) and at the end of that period donors and previous subscribers get preferential seating within their zones.  After that period online buyers can either use a "best seat" tool or an SYOS tool (the latter the default) to select seats.

For the unseated purchases, as long as the price zones line up and the Sub Add-ons are in the same order, then of course we seat them together.  After that with the SYOS it's up to the user to remember where the package seats were to place the Sub Add-ons appropriately, and using "best seat" there's a small chance that another online user will have grabbed intervening seats.  Neither are optimal, and we're planning on some site changes to facilitate at least the former.

  • Here at UMS, we do exactly the same as Gawain does at Cal Perfs - and we do it within TNEW. We sell fixed and flex subs packages, then you can go back and add the Add-Ons using a specific add-on price type, so we can mesh them with custom package sales reports. We also sell everything unseated for the first half of the sales period, then people can choose their own seats for the packages and add-ons later.

You can check through our TNEW site here to see how we've set it up:

    http://tickets.ums.org/single/eventlisting.aspx

    http://tickets.ums.org/subscription/packages.aspx

(Choral Union and Chamber Arts packages are fixed - the rest are flex)

The Series:You package used to be the only one where we allowed people to choose varying seat amounts - but with Tessitura and selling online, really any package customer can add on additional single tickets to any series with the Add-On price type in the subs modes of sale.

I am interested in the v12 pricing rules you talked about, Gawain - wondering how that might change the game...!

Well, if the purpose of a package is to reward buyers of multiple performances with lower priced tickets, then the new discounting rules will be able to do that fairly easily: allowing you to set up rules that automatically discount tickets when more than X tickets are in the cart, or more than X performances.

We'll have to think about it carefully: we like our reporting on packages vs. single tickets, but we also have essentially tiered flex package options with increasing discounts: lowest discount for 4 or more performances, highest for 8 or more.  But you have to choose which performance total you will have as a base before you start selecting performances, so it's not quite as easy for the customer.
