Silverlight Usage

Hi,  I just wanted to see if anyone is using or planning to use Microsoft Silverlight on your web site.  Also if you have any anything to comment about with its usage.  For example visitor experience.

Thank you in advance.

  • I guess no one is, given the response.  My take is that we will remain aggressively compliant with common web standards.  Which at this point means Flash for media programming.

I'm interested, why would you be looking at Silverlight?

  • Well one is cost.   Flash streaming is costlier than silverlight streaming.  Second is the scripting  for Silverlight.  It can be coded in one of the languages that the .Net framework supports.  I am not yet versed in Actionscripting but I have several years developing on the .Net framework.   Also sliverlight uses time based animation rather than frame based.

At the moment I am exploring it more and creating some proof of concept examples that might be used on our website.

  • I'm working on a WPF / Silverlight project in my spare time for a personal project - but it isn't Tessitura related at all

Although the silverlight client is supposed to be cross-platform, I haven't really been pushing for it for our site because I just don't know if the saturation is there in the client space yet.

Although, if you are doing something specific in terms of a very rich media portion of your site (image / movie / audio gallery, etc...) then you can probably get away with going Silverlight and driving that plugin for the value-added stuff - more than if you were to make it a considerable portion of your architecture (like your main menu nav, etc...)
