Requiring Billing Zip Code

Are you requiring patrons to confirm their billing zip code for web purchases? We are looking into this and would love to hear what other organizations are doing. I am particularly interested to hear if you experienced an increase in credit card declines (and the related customer service issues) after you began the requirement.

  • It's been a long time, so I can't remember if this was CVV or ZIP, but there was a thing were some/all credit card processors would actually process the transaction, even though the ZIP (or CVV) was wrong.  It would send back a rejection to TNEW, of course.  When we heard about this from customers we went to the processor to figure out what was going on and they said, "Oh, we process the card in this case, but then we refund the charge afterwards."  When do you refund the charge?  "Within two weeks."
