Do you have a mobile website?

Hello,

We are starting to look at having a mobile website.  I wanted to see what folks are doing with there mobile sites if they have them.  I have looked at seattle opera's mobile site which sells single titckets.  Is anyone else out there doing this?

Thanks!

Jon

  • Thanks Kjersten.   Have you seen much use on it?

Hi Jon. I'll chime in here. I designed, developed and maintain our Science Museum mobile site. I'm looking at my statistics now, and it looks like we average about 200 visits a day to http://m.smm.org. The way I've set up our main site http://www.smm.org automatically redirects mobile phone visitors to the mobile site. (With the exception of iPhones. They get the full site with a header link to view the mobile site if they want... We've found that most iPhone visitors like to browse our full site. Which reminds me I need to test the site on an iPad!)

I'd be happy to answers any other questions you may have about mobile sites. It was fun to work on last fall, and I quickly realized that I needed to go back in time to code like it was 1999. Aka keep your mobile site SIMPLE and very basic.

  • Thanks Eric.  I am seeing more traffic to our main site from mobile devices.  I like the idea of having a more friendly mobile version, at the same time i also see myself seeking the full version of websites on my WinMo device.  I do like the option that you have on your mobile site that alows the user to get to your main site.  Have you thought about doing any mobile ticketing on the mobile site?

Hey Jon. Yeah, we were seeing increased traffic to our website from mobile devices, and our main website is definitely not optimized for other devices. For example, our navigation menu is javascript and really caused major issues when viewing on older devices. So I stripped out most of the site and got it down to only the key areas of our site: hours, directions, dining, ticketing info. So far it's turned out very well. I made sure to add code to "view full site" because as an iPhone user, there's nothing more annoying than ONLY being able to see an organization's mobile site, with no option to get to the rest of the web content.

At this time I don't have plans to optimize our online ticketing for our mobile site. If mobile visitors are so inclined, they can go to our full site on their devices and purchase tickets there. We've tested our online ticketing on phones and you can definitely purchase, just takes a little bit longer to type in all the information...
