Advice on using TNEW's "Create Account Brief" for email list sign-up

Given the issues inherent in maintaining both a web-subscribed WordFly email list and the lists we pull from Tessitura to use in WordFly, campaigns, we've decided to explore using the "Create Account Brief" page in TNEW as our email list sign-up page. Is anyone else here doing that, and can you share any tips?

Some of the concerns we have with this process:

  • There is no "thank you for subscribing" page, they just get redirected to the events/calendar page (the ReturnURL parameter doesn't work on this page)
  • There is no double opt-in (email link to confirm subscription)
  • There is no "unsubscribe" or "no contact" option in the TNEW account settings if someone wants to be removed later (they can do this through the unsub link in WordFly mailings, however)

We can deal with or work around the above issues, but then there's this one:

  • TNEW documentation says they can use the same email address later to convert to a full account for purchases, BUT:
  • It's possible to disable the password requirement on Create Account Brief, which we would like to do (we don't want people to have to create a password for email sign-ups)

I'm not sure what to tell people who register using Create Account Brief how to log in later for ticket purchases. Since they will not have created a password, they can't just log in. But since they do have an account, trying to create a new one with the same email causes an error. It seems the only option is to give them a link to reset their password. No matter what, it's not the smoothest customer experience.

Has anyone found a way around this, or solved any other issues with using this account creation option for email sign-up?

  • We use the TNEW create account brief page for our email list sign up and have for some years now. We don't require sign ups to create a password which does unfortunately cause some issues when they try to create a full account to book tickets later on.

If you are on TNEW v7 you could take a look at guest checkout as well but this wouldn't solve the forgot password issue.

We use interests to manage opt outs so customers are able to opt out on the TNEW interests page. We also have Wordfly integration setup so that unsubscribes through Wordfly are sent back to Tessitura and update the relevant interest.

It is possible to setup a return url to a non-TNEW domain which we had to open a ticket for this to be enabled for our marketing site.

When customers create an account they do receive a thanks for registering email so you could potentially look at customising this with more messaging. An alternative would be setting up a triggered email campaign in Wordfly that would send to newly created accounts.

  • Hey , thanks so much for your reply. Your setup sounds almost identical to ours. I've basically done what you described, in terms of customizing the messaging in the thanks for registering email. HOWEVER... I am very interested to hear that it's possible to set up a non-TNEW return URL. That would be ideal. Did you have to pay a consulting/customization fee for that? I will open a ticket. Thank you for that!

  • There was no customisation fee for this as this (I found out recently) is hidden in the documentation so a ticket should be all you need.

Note: By default, redirects after login are restricted to pages within your domain. If you need to link outside your domain contact the TN Express Web team.

  • Aha, I am aware of the ReturnUrl parameter, but it didn't seem to be working on the Create Account Brief page, only on the Login page, even when the ReturnUrl was in our same domain. Is that what you're talking about? In any case, I opened a ticket, so we'll see what they say. Either way, I really appreciate the tip.

  • I found that the returnUrl parameter didn't like having "www." in the return url and would just default return to the TNEW calendar events page.

Once I got rid of that it worked fine.  This is what I've got for our create brief link which appears to work.
