Email preferences and Auto logins

Wondering how other people handle opt out/preference pages. The rules of the can-spam act state that we can't ask people to log in or provide any information besides an email address, so currently we're using a form that emails us, and each request is hand processed. We've noticed that some people submit the form many times, possibly expecting to see their new preferences reflected on the web page... and we'd like to do that. We'd love to be able to show people what their current preferences are too, but how to get around asking them to log in first?

We're toying with the idea of trying to create a link that will automatically log a customer in using their email address. How does Tessland feel about the concept of auto login? Is it good customer service, or risky business?

  • We create a unique link for each constituent as their "unsubscribe", automatically logging them into their prefs. Nobody has complained regarding privacy issues, and we had a pretty thorough review of the process before implementing. Generally, I think it's great customer service.

However, our auto log-in system has broken down on occasion when our email distribution software (Publicaster) has upgraded their product or made slight changes to their policy. I can give you more details on this over email if you'd like.
