Ultimately, your question here is a huge one and there are (at least) dozens of preliminary points of context to tackle before getting to web practicalities.
Many organizations aren't doing live web booking for school trips yet, mostly because there are so many variables that go beyond the simple question of inventory management. When we were researching ahead of our big New Victory Schools web project, we saw a lot of nice-but-not-integrated forms. Performances vs exhibits splits things further; then there's how payment is dealt with; and so on and so forth. Here at The New Victory, we really prioritize equity in ticket distribution because we have a formal Partnership base that all need to be able to book, but other organizations have open sales and don't need all the set up and cross-referencing we do.
