We use Google Analytics on our site - free and easy to use!

Google for analytics is the right choice, but I think you might be looking for operational monitoring?
We use a vendor, but if you want to roll your own, Nagios is the gold standard, and it's open source, free!
But you'll need an uber-geek to set it up right.
