promos & MOS or offers & appeals

I'm trying to set up an offer on my TNEW site.  Everything is working GREAT.....except.....the price type is showing up even when you DON'T enter the promo code. ( I was using Offers instead of Promos because I was being lazy and didn't want to set up a new MOS.)  In reading all of Kevin's terrific documentation, I've come to conclusion that if I use a promotion, I need a special MOS, and if I use an Offer, I need a special Appeal (with the special Source code).  Otherwise, with or without the promo code, the special price type will show up to everyone.  Any ideas? Have I missed a step?

    Glad you are finding the documentation helpful. 

     

    Offers are intended to control access to a price type based on the entry of a particular source/promo code.  The offer locks the price type until the customer enters a source/promo code linked to the offer.  To make that work, you do need to select an appeal and source for the offer and then communicate the source (or associated promo code) to your customers.  This offers the added bonus of being able to track how your marketing efforts tied to the discount are performing based on the source, which must be entered in order for anyone to get the discount.

     

    In most cases, you should use offers to control access to discount pricing.  Promotions, source triggered mode of sale shifts, are best reserved for when you want to offer special access to a product based on a source, such as a presale, or access to allocated seats (both of which can only be controlled with mode of sale shifts).  Generally speaking, you don’t want to deal with multiple modes of sale unless you really have to.
