Facility Setup: Too Many Screens?

Hey Everyone,

I'm conceptualizing a facility setup and wondered something.

I created a festival facility a few years ago using 25 screens. This was to catch all of the timed events per day over many days. It worked great, but I recall we experienced some Tess lag when trying to access the event through an order, pulling a seat, etc. I recognize this could be have been related to other stimuli at the time (internal server load, connectivity, individual computer performance, etc.). However, the possibility exists that the facility simply had too many screens to load quickly.

So before I venture to build something similar, has anyone built an abundant number of screens into a facility (20+)? If so, how far did you push it, and was there any latency problems accessing the event?

Any advice would be helpful. Thanks!

  • Greetings,

I contacted one of our Resident Companies that uses another venue off campus that requires 34 screens and the Director of Ticketing said that they do not notice any difference in performance when selling orders.  Hope that insight helps a little.

  • Thanks for going out of your way like that Michael. It indeed helps! I'm probably looking at around 60 screens, but it's good to know even 34 is possible.

  • Hi Curtis,

Just curious: how did you end up going building such a large facility? We're in the process of putting together quite a large facility to allow for the future possibility of 24-hour timed entry to our galleries, and are looking at using around 48 screens. Did you encounter any issues along the way?

    Thanks!

  • Hey Andrew,

The only problem I had was with the generic House Map. There is a limit to the amount of objects and text you can have on the House Map when linking to your screens. If you hit that limit, the House Map will go blank and give you a small heart attack.

However, Tess support was able to cut out some extraneous code for us on the backend to bring it back under the limit, and the objects reappeared.

If you're looking to create an object for all 48 screens, you might run into this. You can go with a more simplified House Map and make your sellers scroll through the screens with the arrows. Or you can try the more complex version and see what happens!

Other than that, our new map is living and breathing just fine! Good luck!

  • Thanks so much Curtis, that's very helpful! I encountered the same error, it looks to me like the maximum number of objects might be around the 30ish mark. I've resolved to only have the entry times we're using for our next exhibition appear on the House Map, and like you said, have sellers click through the screens for any other entry times they might need further down the track.

Glad to hear your facility is running smoothly, it's great to hear that other people are working with some pretty massive facilities also!

    Thanks!

    Andrew.
