Donated tickets not intended for re-sale....

Hello All:
I have been approached by our development department about the possibility of patrons donating tickets that would not be re-sold.

The intention is that the development department would use these tickets for potential donors or sponsors.  The patron donating the ticketss would get a tax credit.

I told them I would ask about this in the forum to find out if anyone has been able to get around giving a tax-deductible donation for seats not intended for re-sale.

Does anyone have either experience or opinion on this?

Thank you in advance for any input you might have.

Kindly,

Mark Sackett

  • Our auditors told us that it doesn’t matter if the ticket is re-sold since the patron donating the ticket back is no longer getting the “goods and services” associated with the cost of the ticket.  It is as if they had just given us the cash instead of buying a ticket.  So we really only focus on the patron who purchased the ticket originally and not on if it was resold.  But you might check with your accountant to see if that would work for you.
