Deleting Hold Codes?

Hi all.  I was wanting to do away with hold codes we no longer use.  When I go to delete them I get an error.  I'm asuming it's probably because this hold exists on a past performance.  Should I expire those hold codes that I want to do away with so I can delete them?  Do any of you know a quicker way to do so?  Any help is greatly appreciated as I'd like to make these hold codes go away.
