Gift Certificate sold to General Public?

Hello all, I am struggling to work out a way to check a Gift Certificate when it has been sold to the General Public account. The only methods in the docs to find a balance of a Gift Cert is to search by the Constituent ID for Const's who purchased or redeemed the Gift Cert.

I know that staff could start a dummy transaction to get to the Payment screen to enter and search for the Gift Cert No, then view the report. Is that how most people handle this?

    The “Gift Certificate Details” report takes a gift certificate number as the input parameter and displays all transactions in which the Certificate was used and displays the current balance.
