Seating strategies for undersold shows

Hello all!

We are in the planning stages for our upcoming season and I have a question for you Box Office folks as to how you handle dressing the house for undersold shows?

We had a couple shows this past season that did not sell the way we had hoped and left the House looking scattered and sparse with a clear break in many areas between prices zones.  To correct this, I had to go in and move each individual order closer to the center to create the illusion of a full house to our artists.

I wanted to know if any of you had experienced this same issue and how you handled it?  We are hoping to head this off at the pass this year so the frantic moving patrons problem does not have to occur.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks!!

  • Hi Mary,

We have a weekly meeting between Sales, Technical and Programming to look at things like this, technical seat kills, etc which works brilliantly for us.  If we notice a show that’s not doing as well as we’d like, we do some strategic holding of seats from sale.  And (as those held seats are usually a lower price zone), we’ll re-zone some of what’s left open so that the lower prices are still available to customers.

In the interest of reducing the number of meetings needed, maybe if you nominate someone at your organisation to take a look on a weekly basis and see how things are going?...

    Hope that helps!

    Kathleen
